basketry

Baskets are lowly disposable items which you use until they fall apart and then chuck on the fire. After all, basket makers are ten a penny.

Well, not any more. Fortunately there are those keeping basket making traditions alive, but they are a rarity, and it would be all too easy for the art to disappear altogether.

Once every office, every factory, every shopper, every tradesman, every ship, every laundry, every household, every fisherman, every train, every market had a basket of some sort. They were the unsung workhorse of society. There were even basketwork coffins.

Baskets have been made for tens of thousands of years by every human society across the globe. They range from rustic and industrial to exquisitely crafted. A basket has been made for virtually every purpose.

But with the advent of plastics so the dear old basket was conseigned to the bonfire. Happily, some have escaped that fate, and there is always great pleasure in finding a genuinely old basket, like fiinding a lost companion.

We are pleased to present a stunning range of industrial and domestic baskets at Drawer, while stocks last of course - most of them are never to be made again.
