treen
Turned wooden items are always fascinating; the smoothness of the texture, the depth of the grain and the form designed by the carver have much the same thrill as a well made pot.
Over the years, they are smoothed by human hand or the work they do, and gradually the patina of the wood changes. Oaks turn to a rich darkness while pines take on a mellow honey tone.
For generations, items made from wood would eventually break or wear out and be thrown away or left to rot. Treen items were often "lesser" things with low intrinsic values, unlike silver or china. As a result, old treen is rare and highly sought after by collectors. And it is scrumptiously beautiful.
Victorian and Edwardian treen is still reasonably affordable, but it won't always be like that.
