office
The office; a place to relax and make paper aeroplanes or move piles of paper from the in tray to the out tray and back again. Long lunch breaks, plenty of tea and a few practical jokes on colleagues.
No. I'm talking about the real office, hub of your business enterprise. Connected, global, at the coal face.
Whatever your office is to you, it's a place where you spend a lot of time and it should be what you'd like it to be. You need to be efficient, alert, focussed, but sometimes relaxed, creative, thoughful.
Many offices are a sad conglomerate of uncomfortable furnishings and inappropriate accessories. This is an important place and deserves some careful planning. Whatever you do, don't let it become stale. If things are going well, celebrate your achievements with a change round. If it's getting a bit tough, re-think the room to re-focus your efforts. Let the room reflect your business, but let it lead it as well. Is a glitzy estate agents office for the customers or for the staff?
Make it a personal space. How many times have we seen clinical, characterless offices. You're a real person, so be one. How can your personality get in the way of the job? You ARE the job.
